Off Road Trail Spotlight: Tushar Mountains - St

Southern Utah is a treasure trove of scenic trails and historic sites. You can easily plan a weekend trip with one of your friends or organize a family outing that everyone will enjoy. If you don’t have a couple of friends ready, you can tag along on our trail rides as we explore this fascinating part of our country.

Some of these trails offer you the opportunity to do more than one activity. For instance, you may start off-roading and then opt to go fishing or hiking once you arrive at your destination. The choice is yours.

Tushar Mountains

Located east of Beaver, Utah, and about 190 miles south of Salt Lake City are the Tushar Mountains. This is the third highest mountain range in the state, with the highest peak-Delano Peak - reaching up to 12,174ft. This means that the mountains get plenty of snow so time your trip accordingly. Unless you want to deal with mud and snow, the best time to schedule an off-roading trip is from July to September during the summer months.

You can use the Big Flat Road to get to the Tushar Mountains. This road is unpaved and winding, making for a bumpy ride and it gets quite narrow and steep in places. It goes through a remote area as you approach some of the peaks so it helps to download a trail map that you can take with you on your GPS device.

You’ll be blown away by the stunning vistas and breathtaking views along the route and we bet you won’t resist the urge to take more than a few photos. With high peaks and alpine forests around, who can blame you? There are also plenty of designated spots where you can camp, fish or hike depending on your preference. Also, keep an eye out for wildlife along the way and you can spot ground squirrels, elk, deer or wild turkeys.

Trip Preparation

This trail will have you driving over unpaved, bumpy surfaces with some steep climbs and descents. You’ll need a rig with 4WD and high clearance to make it there and back. To get your ride trail-ready, bring it to the Dixie 4 Wheel Drive auto shop in St. George, choose from one of our 4x4 vehicle build packages, and leave the rest to us. We can have your vehicle ready for the trip as well as give it the necessary repairs and maintenance afterward to keep it running smoothly.

As you make your trip, keep in mind that the Tushar Mountains are in the Fishlake National Forest. This means that you should keep to the designated trail and only camp, hike or fish at designated spots. The area around has no cell phone reception so be aware of this and carry two-way radios or other means of communication.
